Going nowhere fast.

In a memorable scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the lovely Marion is held captive by Indiana’s nemesis, Dr. Belloq. He cautions her not to try to escape because the desert is “Three weeks in every direction.”

Well, what if an escape into the desert is exactly what you want – nothing for miles but mountains of rock, canyons and vast blue skies. Add in the ultimate in luxury accommodations, gourmet food, an imposing wine list and an exquisite spa. Welcome to Amangiri.

Unlike Amangiri’s jet-set clientele (literally – they are whisked in on private jets), it took our crew over 10 hours to travel to this remote southwest corner of Utah. After two flights, we drove for 2.5 hours through the desert. Finally, we saw a small, unobtrusive sign by an electronic gate. Once past, we were on a mile-long private road that snaked through massive stone mesas, revealing nothing – until we were face-to-face with an imposing pavilion. Made of concrete artfully mixed with sand, it seemed to disappear into its surroundings. However, highly visible was the entire staff, standing in front to greet us. We had arrived (literally and figuratively).

Why were we here? With my business partner Koryn, two photographers and a writer, our task was to capture the beauty of Amangiri for an article in the upcoming issue of BMW Magazine, featuring the new BMW M6 Coupe. Sleek and ridiculously sexy, with a roar that pierced the silent surroundings and acceleration that raised dust storms on command, the Black Sapphire Metallic BMW M6 was in stark contrast to the stone and sand. We shot the M6 at dawn, at sunset and in the total dark of night against a backdrop of stars so vivid, you could clearly see both Dippers and the Milky Way.

Amangiri was the perfect combination: spoiled (me) and unspoiled (everything else) – an experience I am not likely to forget.
