Super Dads: The highlight of Superbowl XLIX.

Football fans look forward to the Super Bowl every year – the jerseys, the wings and the “my team is better” banter. Advertisers and marketers look forward to viewing, critiquing and creating their list of favorite commercials. Many just watch the big game for the ads. This year there was a trend in Super Bowl commercials: paying homage to Dads. Dove Men+Care, Toyota and Nissan each had commercials that were very touching; it was all about creating that emotional connection with the viewer. Dove used this great tactic to bring awareness to their male-centric products. As for Toyota, they depicted a dad who is always there – which is smart, since reliability is one of the characteristics Toyotas are known for. It’s been 20 years since Nissan has run an ad during the Super Bowl. Their comeback: a 90-second ad that showcased a racecar-driving dad with a strong connection to the brand. The ad was a bit of a snoozer, but touching. (I’ll be curious to see if these ads will make a run during Father’s Day; the topic has an evergreen feel.)
