Hunka, Hunka, Burnin’ Love

My husband and I recently celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary. Looking back on 10 years of many hills and many valleys, it’s amazing we’ve kept our sanity! But, year after year we celebrate together by exploring new things and really experiencing what life has to offer, together. It helps us create new memories that we cherish as time goes on.

This year we traveled back to Vermont to the small town where we eloped and took a two-hour private glass-blowing class. I know…not your ordinary anniversary trip. But what an amazing experience! In today’s age of instant gratification and “trending” daily topics, it was intriguing to spend some time learning this slow-paced ancient art. Discovered in the 1st century BC and progressing during the rise of the Roman Empire, this ancient craft is still practiced today in much of its same form and technique. Little did we know how this age-old tradition requires a creative mind, a steady hand and a lot of perseverance!

It’s all done very swiftly, yet each step needs to be done slowly and with care. As you take the first blob of hot, glowing, molten glass to the end of your blowpipe, you must swiftly and constantly roll your pipe while slowly pulling, shaping, reheating, molding and ever so lightly blowing. It’s not just the heat that makes you sweat! After each project we were eager to do another to get each step right.

We can see how this can become an addiction! We are already looking for local glass-blowing classes to keep it going.

On our trip we found a new appreciation for the art of glass blowing and a new appreciation for each other, as we helped one another stumble through each increasingly more difficult project. We found that if we slow down, take our time and experience each moment, in the end we will come out stronger…and with an outstanding piece of art!
